A total of 25 drivers including 15 foreign drivers have confirmed participation in the 2015 Mt Gorilla Rally, the fifth round of the Africa Rally Championship(ARC) calendar due to start on July 31 to August 2, 2015 in Nyamata, Rugende.
Felekeni Mayaka, Mitraros Elefterios and Jean Claude Gakwaya, are some of the six Rwandans in the race said to attract continental big names like Zambia’s flying Jassy Singh, Burundi’s Valery Bukera, Rudy Cantanhede, Uganda’s Edson Mungyereza and Tanzania’s Yassin Nasser.
Eric Maxime Nzamwita the course clerk said: “This year, the number of participants has increased compared to previous years. Fifteen foreign drivers have confirmed their participation.”
When asked about the issue of safety, Nzamwita said: “We have a very good record when it comes to safety. We always lead other countries. This is because of good organization. Last year’s accident which led to the death of co-navigator was because of a mistake by his driver.”
The rally event is said cover a total distance of 235km and apparently, after the fifth round of the ARC standings in Tanzania, Kenya driver Jaspreet Chatthe leads the continental rankings with 50 points followed by Jassy Singh, Muna Singh and defending champion Gary Chayes all with 36,30 and 25 points respectively.
