South African, Henk Lategan in a Skoda Fabia S2000, is leading the Rally Waldviertel in Austria, at the end of the first day. He won the last three of the day’s six stages and is 34.9 in the lead.
Second overall in the event is the Hungarian, David Botka, in a Mitsubishi Evo IX R4. The rally is die final round of the European Rally Championship and the Austrian Rally Championship. Third overall is another Hungarian competitor, Jozsef Trencenyi in a Ford Fiesta R5, 54 seconds behind Lategan.
The rally, a mixed surface event, is being held over 13 stages of 175 stage kilometres in length .Some 70 percent of the stages are gravel The international competitors do all 13 stages, but the Austrian championship ias decide over seven stages.
Today’s stages were all asphalt and tomorrow’s stages all gravel. It is raining hard at the moment which may be a problem tomorrow. It also gets dark very early. The last three stages today were driven in the dark.
