Nasser Al-Attiyah’s tally of five victories on the FIA European Rally Championship qualifier is one more than rallying legend Sébastien Loeb notched up.
When Al-Attiyah’s eight victories on the country’s Troodos Rally – a former FIA Middle East championship fixture – are taken into account then it’s little wonder why the Qatari is ranked as a major force to be reckoned with.
“There is no secret but I work very hard and we have the experience,” said the Autotek Motorsport Ford Fiesta R5 driver. “The rally is a mix between slow stage, medium stage and fast stage and we need to manage the speed on the different stage.”
And of the gruelling ambient and ground temperatures expected in Cyprus this week, Al-Attiyah is no fazed: “The hot weather is no problem because we do a lot of race like the Dakar Rally where we stay 12 hours inside the car in hot temperatures. But we know this race is really hard and very hot. It’s my favourite rally and we try to do our best.”
The Cyprus Rally is based in Larnaca from 15-17 June.
