Marketing whiz joined McLaren as an executive director in 2016
The racing buck at McLaren F1 now stops at the desk of American Zak Brown. Autosport is reporting that Brown has been promoted to chief executive officer of McLaren Racing in a restructuring announced on Tuesday in the U.K.
Brown, 46, joined McLaren in 2016 as its executive director of McLaren Technology Group. Previously, Brown was founder and CEO of Just Marketing International — one of the world’s leading marketing firms. Brown also co-owns United Autosports racing team.
According to Autosport, as part of the restructuring, McLaren has been split into three divisions — McLaren Racing, McLaren Automotive and McLaren Applied Technologies.
Jonathan Neale is now COO of the McLaren Group, while Mike Flewitt remains CEO of McLaren Automotive. A new CEO of McLaren Applied Technologies has yet to be introduced.
Team racing director Eric Boullier reports to Brown.
McLaren F1, which finished ninth in the Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship standings in 2017, sits a surprising third this season, behind just Ferrari and Mercedes. Fernando Alonso leads the team’s drivers with a fourth-place standing in the championship.
“These latest developments are a natural consequence of that work and are designed to bring greater simplicity and clarity to the structure and leadership of the group,” said Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa, McLaren Group executive chairman.
