There is just no stopping Mark Cronje/Robin Houghton when they once again walked away with the honours after winning the Secunda Rally in their Ford Performance Ford Fiesta in Secunda this afternoon. The pair took the lead from the start of stage one yesterday afternoon and never really looked in trouble.
Cronje’s stage time for the event was 2:06:22.9 beating the second placed Team Castrol Toyota Yaris of Giniel de Villiers by 51.3. This was one of de Villiers’ best performances in South African rallying. He was of course helped by the fact that three of the top runners, Japie van Niekerk, NAD Ford Fiesta, Henk Lategan and Hergen Fekken, both in Sasolracing Volkswagens, did not finish the rally.
Third overall, his second in a row, was Gugu Zulu also in Sasolracing Volkswagen Polo 1:23.4 behind Cronje, followed in fourth place by Leeroy Poulter in the other Team Castrol Toyota Yaris. Poulter suffered a varienty of problems yesterday and started in 7th plave this morning. He finished 2:38.9 behind Cronje.
in 5th position overall was the Namibian entry of Thilo Himmel in a Sasolracing Volkswagen 4:48.0 off the pace of the leader.
First overall in Class S2000 was Guy Botterill in a Toyota Etios R2, followed by Richard Leeke in a Ford Fiesta R2.
The Secunda Rally was the third round of the South African Rally Championship. A full report and results will be published here when they come to hand.
