The Comsol VW Challenge returns to the highveld after a coastal excursion to the historic East London Grand Prix circuit. Kyalami is a firm favourite with the VW Challenge drivers and at least 30 of them should line up for the sixth round of the 2014 championship.
James Hurley (The Starter Pack Company Polo) had a great outing in East London and extended his overall championship lead to 26 points but behind him things are starting to get very tight. Class B competitors Darren Nathan (Sex Trader Polo) and the unsponsored Lyle Ramsay both have 80 points and share the second spot on the log. Rory Atkinson (Comsol Polo) and Waldie Mentjies (Performance Masters / Marty’s Body & Spray Polo) complete the top five in the overall championship.
Hurley has only been beaten once this season and that was at Kyalami in May. He got back to winning ways in East London, taking victory in both heats although he did admit that the second win was slightly fortunate after Atkinson’s flywheel broke early on in the race. Meintjies is third in the class A championship just six points behind Atkinson. Two podium finishes in East London will have gone some way to putting the memory of his crash at Kyalami in May out of Meintjies’ mind and he will be looking to reduce that gap.
Ramsay had a perfect outing last time out at Kyalami in May and followed it up with a sixth place and a win in East London to share the class B lead with Nathan. With Henry van Vledder moving to class C the leading duo have a substantial lead over the chasing pack. Andy Gosman (Chamdor Veridot & Police Clearance Golf) will be looking to build on his East London performance, where he took the class B overall victory, and close the gap to the leaders.
Francios van Zyl (Jesus Saves Golf) is still leading the class C championship but his lead over Elke van Vledder (Golf) is only one point. Jacques Smith (Triplicon Construction / ELB Construction / UTI Logistics Polo), who took both heat wins in East London, is just five points behind the leader and, based on recent form, is in with a real chance of topping the log after weekend.
A number of drivers will be making a welcome return to the series. Among them are Brad Hall in his new Piazza Motorsport Polo and Gina Munro in her Polo.
Qualifying will take place on Saturday morning at 07h20 with the first of the day’s two 8-lap races getting underway at 10h10. The second race should start at 14h30.
