Twice national rally champion Enzo Kuun celebrated only his second rally of the 2014 National Rally Championship with a trip to the podium on the Toyota Cape Dealer Rally, finishing third in the New Africa Developments Ford Fiesta.
Despite losing time on Saturday’s opening stage and dropping to fifth, Kuun and navigator Gerhard Snyman maintained their composure to work their way back up to their overnight position to make it two podiums in the two events Kuun has participated in this year.
He was making another ‘guest’ appearance in the absence of regular NAD Fiesta driver, Japie van Niekerk, unable to make the Cape event due to business commitments. Snyman is Van Niekerk’s regular navigator, but clicked immediately with the vastly-experienced Kuun, to make his second trip to the podium in succession.
“The conditions on the second day were tricky,” says Kuun, the 2006 and 2010 national champion. “After the opening stage where we were slower than we wanted to be we made a decision to pace ourselves to the finish without taking too many risks, and it was a strategy which paid off. The NAD Fiesta was perfect today, and it is a big thank-you to Japie for making the car available to me.”
