FIVE-TIME WORLD RALLY WINNER KRIS MEEKE HAS ADMITTED HE REMAINS IN CONTACT WITH TOYOTA GAZOO RACING ABOUT A YARIS WRC RETURN THIS SEASON.
He said: “I’m still in talks with Toyota to be involved, maybe in some testing, we’ll see. I keep my options open. I look at all the things that will give me passion.”
Meeke’s fellow former Toyota driver Jari-Matti Latvala insists he’s seeing his season on the sidelines as a ‘pause rather than a stop’ but the Briton is less optimistic about a full-time return to rallying’s top flight.
“I think it’s not possible. At 40 years old, you know around this moment life can change a bit. I would have loved to continue, but the situation arrived like this and it’s like that. I’m realistic. I look to the future, there are many, many things to challenge me.”
All Meeke’s wins came at the wheel of a Citroen before his switch to Toyota for a single season last year.
Toyota team principal Tommi Mäkinen has always talked of a desire to keep both Latvala and Meeke involved in some shape or form.
The Finn will start Rally Sweden next month and his home event in Finland in August. In addition to those two outings, Latvala is looking to add a further three starts in Portugal, Sardinia and Britain.
