Meeke to skip Rally Poland as Breen gets second outing

Citroen has announced it will take part in the Portuguese and Polish events of the WRC calendar this season, but with team leader Kris Meeke skipping the latter event.Citroen, which decided not to take part in the 2016 WRC season in a full-time factory capacity in order to focus on its 2017-spec car, revealed the next two rallies it will enter under the ‘Abu Dhabi Total WRT’ banner.

After missing the most recent rally in Mexico and skipping Argentina as well, the PH Sport-run DS3s will be back for the first European gravel rally of the season in Portugal, with Meeke competing alongside Stephane Lefebvre and Khalid Al-Qassimi.

Lefebvre has only taken part in Rally Monte Carlo so far, where he took an encouraging fifth place, and the 24-year-old will be back in Poland as well alongside Craig Breen.

Breen, winner of ERC event Rally Ireland last weekend, made his first WRC appearance of the season in Sweden, scoring four points with eighth place.

That also means that Meeke, who was a frontrunner in Monte Carlo and Sweden but retired on both occasions after hitting a rock, will not be present in Poland in order to focus on testing the new car.

Citroen meanwhile has chosen to miss the Sardinia-based Rally Italy, which takes place between the Portuguese and Polish events, entirely, with the remainder of its 2016 programme still to be decided.
