Sportscar squad JRM is evaluating a potential rallycross programme having acquired a brace of Mini RX machines from Prodrive. The burgeoning international rallycross scene could be poised to attract another high-profile entry as sportscar outfit JRM considers a programme using Mini machinery initially developed by Prodrive.
The British team has acquired a brace of Mini RX rallycross cars, a complete spares package and all intellectual property for the project from the multi-discipline giant, and is currently evaluating which championship, if any, it will contest in 2015, with further details expected in January.
The Mini RX machine is derived from the World Rally Car originally built for use in the FIA World Rally Championship. It utilises the same chassis as the WRC contender, but features an upgraded 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, lightweight body panels and other performance-enhancing modifications as permitted in rallycross.
“The Mini RX has had a limited number of outings in rallycross up to this point, but we believe we’ve got ourselves an extremely competitive package,” JRM executive director James Rumsey said, “The car won on its debut at the X Games with Liam Doran and we know that the chassis and handling characteristics are hugely impressive. We’re delighted that we’ve brought such a fantastic package to JRM and we’re working hard to prepare for the 2015 season.”
JRM’s evaluation will be aided by the expert knowledge of current employees previously a part of the original Mini World Rally Team responsible for building the cars in 2011. JRM is currently engaged in multiple sportscar programmes as an official partner of Nissan Motorsport International (Nismo), winning in both the FIA GT1 World Championship and Blancpain Endurance Series titles in recent years. It is also an official base team for Subaru Tecnica International (STI) and builds R4-specification Subaru WRX STI rally cars for use in various FIA and international rally championships, giving it off-road know-how to apply to the rallycross project.
