More of the same in Polokwane

With two stages to go on the Polokwane Rally in Polokwane nothing has changed and Leeroy Poulter in the Team Castrol Toyota Yaris holds a comfortable lead over the second placed Hans Weijs in a Sasolracing Volkswagen Polo, with Gugu Zulu in another Sasolracing Volkswagen Polo in third overall.

But of course, the fat lady has not sung yet! After his bad luck yesterday, Giniel de Villiers in the Imperial Toyota Yaris showed this morning what could have been if he did not have the electrical problems yesterday. A stage win and a couple of top three positions on the stages have moved him into sixth overall.

Hergen Fekken in the other Team Castrol Toyota Yaris who lost ten minutes on the opening stage this morning and dropped to 10 overall, has also made up two places and is in eigth overall.

***News just is is that Fekken is out of the rally. The reason for his demise is not known, but if the scoring on the previous event is anything to go by, he will be scored. And then Giniel de Villiers has just won another stage!

As for the current overall standings Poulter leas with a time of 1:38:31.1 followed by Weijs 2:21.4 behind and Gugu Zulu 2:34.1 behind Poulter. Unless something untoward happens on the last two stages, Poulter would score a runaway victory and cement his championship title chances.

In fourth position is the young Namibian Wilro Dippenaar in a S2000 Challenge Toyota Auris 2:37.4 behind Poulter. Next up in fifth is the current S1600 championship leader, Guy Botterill in a Toyota Etios R2 10:09.0 behind the leader.

To say that the final results of this rally would come as somewhat of a surprise would be a bit of an understatement. It is difficult to try and imagine when last the attrition rate has been so high among the S2000 carswith only four, including the S2000 Challenge entry, able to score full championship points.

The rally, the seventh round of the SA National Rally Championship, is due to finish at about 14:00.

The final round of the championship is to be held at a venue which is still a well-kept secret, but will take place in November. Maybe!
